To Capture Beirut (essays from earlier)

This is Not Beirut
Jayce Salloum, Lebanon, video, 49 min., 1994

This is Not Beirut
Over 200 hours of Hi-8, VHS and "found" film material were shot and collected in Lebanon during 1992. This project is Jayce Salloum's heroic attempt at making some sense out of that footage and its acquisition. It also sheds some light on the difficult, often impossible, process of making a film about Lebanon.

". . .(A) provocative look at a problematized and constantly reconstructed Lebanon. . ." - Irina Leimbacher, San Francisco Cinematheque

Credits Included: A Video in Red and Green
Jalal Toufic, Lebanon, in Arabic with English Subtitles, video, 45 min., 1995

Credits Included
"Credits Included registers the withdrawal of tradition past a surpassing disaster (the fifteen-year Lebanese war); produces completed crossword puzzles with subsisting blank spaces in a country of shattered shop signs; exhibits the rise in 1992-Beirut of a sublime architecture of bricks in a period where it appears Arabs are being driven to the Stone Age (Palestinians throwing stones at the Israeli army in the Occupied Territories, etc.); and uses fiction to document the eruption of psychotic effects in and outside mental hospitals." - Jalal Toufic
