Violeta Gutierrez
voices gather in
the space between
our houses.

they rise in
a language foreign to me.

and i feel like a spy.
like i am prying
while trying to
catch their escaping gaze

and

admiring
their
array of
headscarves.

their long white beards and
the young mens'
strong
handsome faces and

my favorite was

that
night
when

i sat at that
corner table
in front of
the western
kitchen window

in the dark

enchanted by
the colors of
the twilight sky

when three saint-like
women floated by

draped in white

glowing violet
under street light

and their bodies
looked like ships whose
sails gathered
holy wind and
the concrete was
dark sea and

i merely
a ghost
catching one last

vision:

women
vessel
ships
violet
sea
